Why is my Black and Decker Iron won’t heat up?

So your Black and Decker iron won’t heat up?

It’s frustrating. Black and Decker irons are one of the most affordable products that you can buy online.

But electronics products are not so reliable, be it a mobile of $1000 or a steam iron of $100.

Why is my Black and Decker iron won’t heat up?

In this article, we’re going to look at the options of fixing your Black+Decker steam iron with a step-by-step guide. Fixing a steam iron at home is possible if you know what you’re doing.

Let’s get started:

Why is my Black and Decker iron won’t heat up?

Here is the list of reasons that could prevent your Black and Decker iron from heating up:

  • Thermal fuse blown away
  • Heating element damaged
  • Thermostat isn’t working properly
  • Faulty cord
  • Circuit board damaged

Now we are going to find out the real problem of a Black and Decker iron heating issue (iron not heating up but light on). The methods are described below are in order.

#1- Faulty cord connection

The first thing to check is to make sure that you actually have electric power getting to the steam iron. Many times the problem is simply caused by a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty outlet, a worn or broken plug on the end of the cord.

To check if it’s a faulty connection you can use a multimeter (affiliate link, highly recommended) for continuity check of the cord. If it’s beeping then the cord is ok and you can move to the next step.

#2- Thermal fuse is blown away

Some of the Black and Decker irons come with thermal fuses as extra protection from overheating. If the iron heating element is overheated and the power supply isn’t auto disconnected then the thermal fuse blows away.

Some models don’t have this extra protection and they only have thermostat control. So if your model doesn’t have this then move to the next step. Also, this step is required to open the iron, you’ll find a video below on how to do that.

Also, read this guide if your iron is beeping continuously.

#3- Thermostat isn’t working properly

The thermostat is just an on/off switch that works on the temperature of the base of the iron. Now the thermostat or temp dial is a variable resistor in the circuit board.

When you regulate it, resistance decreases or increases so does the temperature of the heating element.

If the thermostat or the resistor is faulty then the iron may not heat up properly. To fix this you can check the continuity of the thermostat or the resistor. This step requires opening the iron.

#4- Faulty Heating element

The heating element of irons is made of Nichrome (80% Nickel, 20% Chromium) wire. Nichrome has relatively high resistance and forms an adherent layer of chromium oxide when it is heated for the first time.

If the heating element is broken then you can join the part together and use it again or contact a professional about this.

Buying a local heating part can be dangerous as it can get much hotter than the specified limit of an iron.

In most cases, the heating element isn’t damaged, so it’s better to look at the circuit board of the iron.

#5- Circuit board Probem

In today’s world, everything is modern. Irons has more than before including auto shutoff, anti-drip, auto clean, pre-temperature settings, steam burst, indicators, etc.

Because of this, most of the iron comes with a circuit board that stores all the settings. If the circuit board gets damaged due to a short circuit or water splash, you may have to replace the parts or the whole circuit board.

Now you’ve to buy a circuit board of the model or will have to contact an electronics technician to fix the iron.

Black & Decker Iron Cleaning Guide

There are some ways to extend the life of a Black and Decker iron by taking proper care with periodic maintenance of your iron.

#1- Clean the Water Tank

Cleaning your iron at an interval of 2 weeks is the most recommended. You can use the auto-clean / self-clean button on your iron and see the magic for yourself.

To clean the iron, you can use a Vinegar-water solution and pour it into the iron. Set it to maximum temperature and press the steam burst button near the kitchen sink.

It’ll remove all the dirt and impurities from your iron.

#2- Clean the Soleplate of the Iron

By cleaning the outer side of the soleplate you’re increasing ironing quality and saving your clothes fabric.

If there is any gunk on the soleplate it can damage other clothes. To clean it use toothpaste and a clean cloth. Apply the toothpaste and wipe it down with the cloth. It should remove the gunk.

Remember, you’re cleaning the soleplate when the iron is disconnected from the power supply and cool before applying the pest. Or you’ll burn yourself as the temperature of irons can reach up to 400 F.

While Shark irons are great but they also have problems in their ironing journey, read the guide here.

Conclusion

We hope that your Black and Decker iron heating issue is solved by applying these fixes. For future reference, make sure to clean your Black and Decker iron properly.
